19,209

I grew up in Dickinson County, KS.

According to the US Census, there are about 19,200 people in DK County. Didn't seem like that many.

Other stuff about the D - K:

50.8% of the residents are women (compared to 50.3% in KS overall). Just goes to show that my county is a pro-equality, equal opportunity county--all about balance and diversity.

97% of the population is white. (compared to 89.4 in KS overall). Ok, scratch that thing I was saying about diversity and balance.

Population change in the last 5 years: -.7%. Just kicking out the hippies.

Persons per household: 2.40.

Persons with a disability: 3,506. Evidently they didn't count NASCAR Obsession as a disability. That would have popped it up 10 or 12 thousand.

Other things about the D-to-the-K that the Census people didn't have time to report/are keeping on the DL/thought they dreamt.

1. DK residents know how to run a good monopoly.
One man owns the entirity of Chapman. He's also the resident fireworks man and superintedent of the school there.

Another man has the corner on the market of all hardware/dork rocks/litte ugly figurine-type things as well as dead people. Believe he's also served as Mayor and Head Leprechaun.

Also, those of homosexual orientation seem to have a monopoly on caring for historic mansions.

2. DK is the home of Detroit. That's DE-troit, not De-TROIT, and its where you go if you want to drink at noon. Or at 9 a.m.. Or whenever.

3. DK is home to 8 zillion schools. Residents of this county like to fight to the death to preserve school buildings that are unsafe for their children to step foot into.

4. The world's oldest high school rivalry also is located in DK. This rivalry often takes the form of throwing dead farm animals on the opposing school's roof/into their ventilation system, spray painting football fields, and covering all things green with orange paint or vice versa.

This ritual is usually followed some years later by marrying someone from the opposing town.
