Thoughts for Today

A couple of things I've been thinking about this morning . . .

First, the evacuation of foreign nationals in Lebanon is going on, and there is a lot in the media about how U.S. citizens over there are unhappy with the American evacuation effort -- it's unorganized, it is taking too long, etc., etc.). Either (1) this is just stupid media spin, and evacuees don't really feel that way or (2) the evacuees are fucking idiots. No one can seriously tell me that people thought Lebanon would be a safe little middle eastern vacation spot. They had to know that there was an element of danger when they went. Do people really have such a sense of entitlement as U.S. citizens that they complain when their country doesn't come to rescue them from their own mess fast enough?

Second, President Bush is going to speak at the NAACP convention today. It is the first time since he was elected that he has accepted their invitation to speak, and he is only the second president to ever refuse to speak at one of their conventions. Still, given that the recently replaced leader of the NAACP called him a Nazi, it really isn't suprising he decided to skip this little shin dig to date. My question is this: if Bush gets on stage, and the crowd boos and acts like a bunch of fucking disrespectful, no class morons (and my money says they will), what will be the fall out? I say that it is two fold. One, Bush gets a bump in his approval ratings because nothing brings out supporters like a group of vocal detractors. Two, the NAACP finally is recognized for the racist, emotionally-driven and reason-deprived crapper that it is -- people who can't listen respectfully while the President of the United States is talking do not deserve our respect or even our tolerance.
